In & Around Bundaberg

Kalua Motel sits in the heart of Bundaberg — Queensland's rum capital, home to one of the world's most important turtle-nesting beaches, the birthplace of pioneering aviator Bert Hinkler, and the southern gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. We're on Hinkler Avenue itself (named after the same hometown hero whose aviation museum sits just down the road) — well-positioned for everything Bundaberg has to offer.

Bundaberg Rum Distillery

Australia's most iconic rum and a Bundaberg institution since 1888 — book a guided tour through the working distillery, see the famous Polar Bear up close, and finish at the tasting bar.

Best time to visit: Year-round; tours daily — book ahead

Mon Repos Turtle Centre

One of the most important turtle-nesting beaches in the South Pacific. Watch loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest, then six weeks later, witness the hatchlings make their first dash to the sea. Guided ranger tours run each evening through the season; bookings are essential.

Best time to visit: Nesting Nov–Jan; hatchlings Jan–Mar

Distance: ~15 min drive east via Bundaberg–Bargara Road

Hinkler Hall of Aviation

Right on Hinkler Avenue — a tribute to Bundaberg's pioneering aviator Bert Hinkler, the first man to fly solo from England to Australia in 1928. The museum houses original aircraft, Hinkler's actual cottage (relocated piece by piece from England), and immersive exhibits across two storeys.

Best time to visit: Walking distance / short drive — confirm

Distance: Year-round; check seasonal opening hours

Bargara Beach

Bundaberg's beach precinct, just east of the city — a Coral Sea–facing strip of cafés, restaurants and quiet swimming. The Basin is a popular family swimming spot, and the foreshore walks at sunrise are something special.

Distance: ~15–20 min drive east

Best time to visit: Year-round; spring and autumn are perfect

Lady Elliot & Lady Musgrave Islands

Bundaberg is the closest gateway to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Day cruises depart from Bundaberg Port (and from Town of 1770) for Lady Musgrave Island — snorkelling and diving directly off the reef. Lady Elliot is accessible by light aircraft and is a marquee dive destination.

Distance: Bundaberg Port: ~20 min drive | Lady Elliot flights from Bundaberg Airport

Best time to visit: Year-round; manta-ray season May–Aug; whale season Jun–Oct

Bundaberg Botanic Gardens

A lush 27-hectare park complex on the edge of the city — picnic spots, the Australian Sugar Cane Railway, the Fairymead House Sugar Museum, and the original Bert Hinkler House. A peaceful half-day, especially with kids.

Distance: ~5 min drive

Best time to visit: Year-round; mornings are coolest
